The Day of the Dead

Once a year, on October 31, people in Mexico, dressed in Day of the Dead costumes as skeletons, walk through the streets and parties are held in the cemeteries. It is said that on the Day of the Dead, the deceased awaken from their eternal sleep. You may have thought that Dia de los Muertos is the Mexican version of Halloween, but there are vast differences. Halloween is more somber, Day of the Dead is colorful & joyful. Day of the Dead is a celebration of life and death.

It originated in Mexico, but is now celebrated throughout Latin America. From October 31 to November 2, an altar is set up at home or in the cemetery and decorated with flowers. The favorite meal of the deceased, something to drink, toys for deceased children and pictures of the dead are placed. A flower road from the altar to the grave is supposed to lead the dead back to the afterlife.

In movies like "Coco - More Alive than Life", " Salma's Secret", "Manolo and the Book of Life" and "James Bond: Spectre" you get a little insight into the Mexican family holiday Day of the Dead. Probably through these recent movies came the hype of wearing a Day of the Dead costume on Halloween. Especially for our little ones, a Day of the Dead costume is a kid-friendly Halloween disguise.

Day of the Dead costume for Halloween

Although the really colorful festival is celebrated on Halloween, it actually has nothing to do with the spooky night - it reminds more of a carnival parade. Nevertheless, a Day of the Dead costume is totally in trend on Halloween. Although the Day of the Dead and Halloween have nothing to do with each other, we can find some similarities in the costumes. Following "La Catrina", fancy dresses and suits are worn as Day of the Dead costume and the face is made up with skeleton makeup. The Day of the Dead costume, as well as the skull makeup, is always decorated with bright colors, flowers and glitter stones. The Sugar Skull Make-Up can, for example, spice up a skeleton costume long forgotten in the dress-up prop box. A Day of the Dead costume is definitely fancier than the simple Halloween skeleton costume and most importantly, more colorful. Dressed as a Sugar Skull, women like to wear dark veils or hair bands adorned with gorgeous flowers with their Day of the Dead costume. The men's Day of the Dead costume likes to resemble a dead Mexican musician with a sombrero.
